Clavillia is a herb perennial that can reach a height of 50-100 cm. It produces flowers usually open up around four in the afternoon (hence the common name four o'clock). It's a common ornamental plant in the world. Not sure if it comes originally from Mexico, Chile and India. Today, you can find in South America, Latin America, France and India.

The chemical analysis of this plant have shown that it is rich in active ingredients, including triterpene, proteins, flavonoids, alkaloids and steroids. Of particular interest to researchers is a group of proteins, localized in the seeds, in roots and shoots, which showed a specific antiviral and antifungal. Of Hong Kong researchers have isolated some of these proteins localized in the root of the plant and have shown antiviral effects, abortifacients, antiproliferative and tumor cells.

Seeds are also concentrated some peptides that have shown a similar neurotoxic peptide that is found in the venom of spiders. Although the level of toxicity is not high, the seeds are not usually used in folk medicine.

In addition to antiviral effects, in the plant and the roots were found in 2001 of phenolic compounds that have shown in vitro to be active against Candida albicans. In another study, an extract of hot flower, leaf and root of clavillia showed antifungal activity. While in a previous search, the components of the root showed the effects of uterine stimulant and antispasmodic action.

Traditionally, the clavillia, is used both as an ornamental plant and as a remedy in folk medicine.
